The psychology of chance and gambling harm
Many gambling-related harms are rooted in cognitive biases — systematic errors in probability thinking. The Gambler's Fallacy (believing past outcomes affect independent future events), loss aversion (feeling losses more acutely than equivalent gains), and the illusion of control (overestimating one's influence over random outcomes) are the most documented. Exclusive Chance Zone exists, in part, to address these biases with clear information. But information alone does not prevent harm — if gambling is affecting your life, please use the resources below.
Warning signs
- Spending more than you can afford on gambling
- Chasing losses — continuing to gamble to recover lost money
- Believing you have a "system" that beats the house edge
